Attributed by the Wexler Team as Wexler Variety ID: 1964 Working Hub Reverse 1 (WWHR-002), this doubled working hub reverse on a 1964 Jefferson Nickel represents a variety created at an earlier stage in the die manufacturing process than a standard doubled die. While a doubled die (DDR) is produced when a working hub impresses a working die with a slight misalignment on a second hubbing, a doubled working hub (WWHR) occurs one step earlier — when the master die impresses the working hub with a doubled image, which then propagates that doubling to every working die produced from it. This means every die made from WWHR-002 would carry the same doubling, potentially affecting a larger number of struck coins than a single doubled die would. The 1964 Jefferson Nickel holds extraordinary significance in American numismatics as the last year of pre-clad coinage production, struck in massive quantities as the Mint raced to build coin inventories before the composition change mandated by the Coinage Act of 1965. Philadelphia alone struck over one billion nickels in 1964, deliberately omitting mintmarks from many 1965-dated coins struck using 1964 dies to confuse hoarders.
