1961 Doubled Working Hub Reverse WWHR-002
ErrorDescription
Second of four documented doubled working hub reverses for the 1961 Jefferson Nickel, attributed by the Wexler Team as Wexler Variety ID: 1961 Working Hub Reverse 2 (WWHR-002). This variety represents the second confirmed instance where the master die transferred a doubled impression to a working hub during the 1961 nickel die manufacturing process. The working hub stage is critical in the die production hierarchy because each working hub can produce multiple working dies, amplifying the reach of any doubling it carries — unlike a doubled working die, which affects only coins struck from that single die, a doubled working hub affects all dies spawned from it and therefore all coins struck by any of those dies. The distinction between WWHR-001, 002, 003, and 004 for 1961 establishes that four separate hub blanks received misaligned secondary impressions, each producing a unique doubling pattern on the Monticello reverse. Felix Schlag's detailed architectural rendering — with its columned entrance, windowed facade, and dome — provides ample fine detail where hub-level displacement manifests as measurable offset. The 1961 date was the twenty-third year of the original Schlag design, and production at the Philadelphia Mint was entering a period of increasing output that would accelerate through the mid-1960s coin shortage era.
