1964 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-013
ErrorDescription
Cataloged as WDDO-013, this 1964 Jefferson nickel doubled die obverse is a Class V (Pivoted Hub) variety showing close doubling on LIBERTY, the five-pointed star, and the date. This listing has an interesting provenance: it was formerly designated WDDO-053 and now replaces the original WDDO-013, which was delisted because the doubling was considered too minor. The replacement variety, however, displays clearly visible Class V hub doubling where the hub pivoted slightly during the die-making process, producing an arc-shaped displacement pattern on the affected design elements. The coin is struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel, weighing 5.0 grams with a 21.2 mm diameter. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge to the lower right of the second T of TRUST and two slanted die scratches in Jefferson's hair above his ear. The reverse of this die pair is separately listed as WWHR-001, indicating it carries a doubled working hub reverse as well. The 1964 Jefferson nickel was produced in enormous quantities as the last year before the Coinage Act of 1965 altered minting practices, making doubled die varieties from this date relatively accessible to cherry-pickers despite their scarcity. This variety belongs to the Jefferson Nickels Original Design 1938-2003 series featuring Felix Schlag's portrait design.
