1964 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-010
Error
Description
Reported by Lee Hiemke, DDR-010 on the 1964 Philadelphia Washington quarter exhibits light spread on QUARTER DOLLAR and both the olive and laurel stems flanking the heraldic eagle on John Flanagan's reverse design. The olive branch (left) and laurel branch (right) extend from beneath the eagle, with their fine stems providing delicate design elements where hub doubling produces visible offset even at light intensity. The 1964 quarter holds the distinction of being the final year of 90% silver composition for circulating Washington quarters — the Coinage Act of 1965 would replace silver with copper-nickel clad the following year. This terminus date generated extraordinary mintages as the public hoarded silver coins, making 1964 quarters among the most common silver issues by total production yet increasingly collectible for their precious metal content. With a DDR number reaching 010, the 1964 date clearly received substantial attention from variety researchers, and DDR-010 represents one of many doubled die reverses cataloged from the massive production run. Examination under magnification should focus on the stem details and QUARTER DOLLAR lettering.
