1963 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-008

Description

Showing strong spread on the upper portion of the 6 in the date, DDO-008 on the 1963 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel carries die marker DMR-0 in the VarietyVista system. Strong spread on a single digit — particularly on the curved upper bowl of the 6 — indicates a hub doubling event where the misalignment produced clearly visible separation. The upper 6 serves as an effective pickup point because its curved geometry amplifies even modest positional shifts. Felix Schlag's Jefferson portrait, adopted after a 1938 design competition, places the date in the lower right beneath Jefferson's bust where it is readily accessible for examination. The 1963 Philadelphia nickel was struck in standard copper-nickel (75% copper, 25% nickel) during the final full year before the coin shortage of 1964-65. Variety researchers have documented at least eight DDO varieties for this date, with DDO-008 distinguished by its concentration of visible doubling on the date rather than on LIBERTY or IN GOD WE TRUST.
