1963 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-035
ErrorDescription
Attributed by Lou Coles, WDDR-035 on the 1963 Jefferson nickel shows Class II (Distorted Hub) doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the spread increasing from left to right across both inscriptions. This progressive intensification — strongest at the rightmost letters — is characteristic of hub distortion that warped the steel surface unevenly, creating more displacement at one edge than the other. The obverse carries what attributors describe as a minor DDO, meaning this die pair exhibits doubling on both sides, though the obverse effect is too subtle to warrant a separate WDDO listing. Reverse die markers include die gouges above the right corner of the Monticello building and a die gouge below the R of AMERICA. Monticello's architectural lines — columns, pediment, and roofline — provide excellent reference geometry for spotting doubling that increases in one direction, as straight lines reveal progressive displacement more clearly than curved elements.
