1963-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-010
Error
Description
From the final year of Franklin half dollar production, the 1963-D DDO-010 carries the added significance of originating at the Denver Mint, which struck its last Franklin halves before the Kennedy design replaced the series in 1964. Light spread appears on the L of LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the 63 of the date — a pattern affecting both the legend and the date while leaving much of the portrait area undoubled. Cataloged under UVC-247 / DMR-015 by VarietyVista, die stages progress from Early Die State (Stage A, unconfirmed) through Mid Die State (Stage B, both obverse and reverse) to Late Die State (Stage C, unconfirmed). The partial LIBERTY spread — limited to the L alone — combined with spread on the last two date digits suggests a hub displacement that produced its widest effect near the lower left of the obverse. Franklin half dollar varieties from 1963-D represent terminal-year production, making them inherently finite; no new working dies for this date and mint were ever produced after the series concluded.
