1963-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-008
Error
Description
Tracked through the VarietyVista system with UVC-241 and DMR-009 designations, the 1963-D Franklin Half Dollar DDO-008 shows light spread on LIBERTY — a subtle doubling pattern consistent with close hub misalignment during the die preparation process. Three die states frame the variety's progression: Stage A (EDS, unconfirmed), Stage B (obverse and reverse at MDS), and Stage C (LDS, unconfirmed). The confirmed mid-die-state observation anchors the attribution while leaving early and late state specimens as targets for future discovery. Light spread on LIBERTY indicates the hub shifted minimally between impressions, producing a secondary image that overlaps almost entirely with the primary but creates detectably thicker lettering under magnification. The 1963-D was struck at the Denver Mint in the final year of the Franklin Half Dollar series, with a mintage exceeding 67 million coins — the highest mintage in the entire Franklin series. This massive production required enormous numbers of working dies, each prepared through the hubbing process that could introduce misalignment errors. Eight doubled die obverses documented for the 1963-D reflects both that substantial die consumption and the systematic research applied to this terminal-year issue. Attributed by VarietyVista, DDO-008 adds to the growing catalog of Denver Mint Franklin Half varieties that specialists pursue as part of comprehensive series collections spanning every die pair anomaly documented across the series' sixteen-year production run from 1948 through 1963.
