1962-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-004

Description

Fourth and final documented RPM for the 1962-D Franklin Half Dollar, this RPM-004 shows a D over D repunched to the south — completing the date's remarkable four-variety RPM set that spans bidirectional triple punching (RPM-001), northeast diagonal (RPM-002), eastward horizontal (RPM-003), and now southward vertical displacement. The southward correction means the die maker's initial D punch landed too high, requiring downward adjustment — remnants of the first D appear above the final position, where the initial impression's base curves extend beyond the definitive letter's top boundary. Four RPM varieties representing four distinct displacement directions (or in RPM-001's case, two directions plus triple punching) on a single date-mint provide an exceptional demonstration of how independently prepared dies each receive unique mintmark placement errors. The 1962-D was the penultimate Denver Franklin Half Dollar — only one more Denver date would be produced before the series ended. Struck in 90% silver at 30.6mm and 12.5 grams, Sinnock's Benjamin Franklin and Liberty Bell designs were in their fifteenth year. This southward RPM-004 completes the 1962-D's RPM set, providing collectors with four distinct varieties to locate and compare across a single date.
