1962-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-006
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista, the 1962-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-006 on the Washington Silver Quarter shows light spread combined with medium extra thickness on the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. The Washington Quarter, designed by John Flanagan after a Laura Gardin Fraser competition design was controversially rejected, was struck at the Denver Mint in 90% silver (6.25 grams, 24.3 mm diameter) during the final years of silver coinage before the 1965 transition to clad composition. VarietyVista assigns die markers UVC-1026 and DMR-013 with three documented die stages: Stage A at Early Die State (unconfirmed), Stage B at Mid Die State showing a die crack with chips running across Washington's bust into the queue (ponytail) plus a die crack across the eagle's head on the reverse, and Stage C at Late Die State (unconfirmed). The progression from early to mid die state is identified primarily through the development of the bust-to-queue die crack, which begins as a hairline fracture and expands with continued use. The die chips accompanying this crack indicate material beginning to separate from the die face. Collectors targeting this variety should examine the IN GOD WE TRUST lettering under magnification for the characteristic extra thickness that distinguishes hub doubling from the more common and less valuable machine doubling or die deterioration doubling.
