1956 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-005
Error
Description
A proof-only variety from the Philadelphia Mint, this 1956 Roosevelt Dime doubled die obverse is documented by VarietyVista under UVC-278 and DMR-007. Three die stages have been recorded: Stage A in early die state with characteristics of the freshest impressions from this die, Stage B in mid die state as the die accumulated service wear, and Stage C where both obverse and reverse are in late die state showing the maximum deterioration features. Proof Roosevelt Dimes from the mid-1950s were struck on specially prepared silver planchets with polished dies, producing coins with mirror-like fields and frosted devices that make doubled die features particularly visible under examination. The contrast between the reflective proof surface and any displaced design elements highlights doubling that might be difficult to detect on a business strike with standard luster. Sinnock's Roosevelt portrait, with its fine hair detail, the lettering of IN GOD WE TRUST and LIBERTY, and the date numerals, provided several areas susceptible to hub doubling during the proof die manufacturing process at Philadelphia.
