1956 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Primary doubled die reverse for the 1956 Proof Roosevelt Dime, WDDR-001 shows light spread on the letters around the rim and the E and P of E PLURIBUS UNUM. Discovered by Whaden Curtis and attributed by the Wexler Team, the obverse markers include a very light die scratch running north-northeast from the ear and a die scratch southwest below the R of TRUST. The reverse carries a light die gouge between the O in OF and the flame, plus a light die gouge between the E and R of AMERICA at the top. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1956 10-cent Proof WDDR-001. The proof format involved specially polished dies and carefully selected planchets at Philadelphia, yet hub doubling occurs during the die manufacturing stage before any striking takes place, making proof coins equally susceptible to doubled dies. The 1956 proof dime was part of the annual proof set program, and while the doubling is described as light, its presence on the lead DDR designation for the date confirms it as the most prominent reverse hub anomaly documented for this proof issue.
