1956 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-012
ErrorDescription
Attributed by William Hostutler, this 1956 Proof Jefferson Nickel WDDO-012 is a Class II (Distorted Hub Doubling) variety showing close doubling on the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. Class II doubling occurs when a distorted or warped hub is impressed into the working die, producing spread that may vary in direction and intensity across different portions of the design — distinguishing it from the uniform rotational displacement of Class I varieties. The obverse die markers include a short die gouge on the lower front portion of Jefferson's collar and diagnostic features that help confirm attribution on specimens where the close doubling may be difficult to resolve. The reverse carries additional markers: a die dot in the left arch of Monticello and a die scratch to the upper left of the small left window. These architectural details of Monticello provide precise reference points for locating the reverse die markers. As a proof striking from the Philadelphia Mint, this variety was produced using specially prepared dies on polished planchets, and the mirror-like proof surface enhances the visibility of even close-spread doubling under proper lighting. Attributed under the Wexler variety designation 1956 WDDO-012 Proof, collectors should examine IN GOD WE TRUST under magnification for the Class II spread and verify the collar gouge and the reverse architectural markers.
