Description

Displaying the relatively uncommon Class VI distended hub doubling, WDDO-005 of the 1956 Proof Jefferson Nickel shows close extra thickness on the lower portions of the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST and LIBERTY. Class VI doubling occurs when the hub becomes slightly distended or enlarged between impressions, causing the secondary impression to extend beyond the boundaries of the primary one, producing extra thickness rather than the lateral displacement seen in more common doubling classes. The effect concentrates on the lower letter portions because the distension was greatest at that region of the hub. The obverse carries a die dot in Jefferson's hair to the right of his temple as a confirming die marker, while the reverse is independently listed as 1956 Pr 5c WDDR-021, establishing a dual-variety die pairing.
