1950 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-005
Error
Description
On John R. Sinnock's Franklin Half Dollar obverse, DDO-005 from the 1950 proof issue shows light spread on design elements including the date. The reverse is paired with RDV-001b (Reverse Die Variety 001b), identifying the specific reverse working die. Die markers UVC-031 and DMR-007 confirm the obverse die, with three documented die states: Stage A in Early Die State (unconfirmed), Stage B where both obverse and reverse reach Mid Die State, and Stage C in Late Die State (unconfirmed) with advanced deterioration. The 1950 proof Franklin Half Dollar was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 90% silver at 12.5 grams — a substantial coin whose large 30.6mm diameter aids detection of subtle hub doubling. The Franklin series (1948-1963) features Benjamin Franklin's portrait on the obverse and the Liberty Bell on the reverse. As a proof struck on polished planchets, mirror-like fields enhance contrast for examining the light spread. Collectors can track the die-state progression from EDS through MDS to LDS across three documented stages.
