1950 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

Cataloged in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1950 50-cent Proof WDDO-001, this proof Franklin half dollar displays a spread toward the center visible on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, the designer's initials, the bust, the eyelid, the back of the hair, and the lower hair curls. A second hubbing shows tripling on TRUST, the 5 of the date, and RTY of LIBERTY, indicating that the die received at least three separate hub impressions during its manufacture. Obverse die markers include a light die gouge between the W and E of WE near the top. The reverse carries several diagnostics near HALF: a die gouge below the underside of the horizontal bar of the F toward the left, a north-south die gouge near the rim below the right side of the F, a large die chip inside the left lower side of the A, and a die chip centered on the underside of the A's horizontal bar. Proof Franklin varieties from 1950 are scarce relative to later dates in the series, as proof mintages remained modest in the early years of the denomination.
