1950 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002

Description

Light spread and extra thickness on the date, LIBERTY, and IN GOD WE TRUST define DDO-002 of the 1950 Proof Franklin Half Dollar, an early proof issue in the series running 1948 through 1963. Attributed by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-028 and DMR-004, the reverse carries the RDV-001b designation identifying a specific reverse die variety. Three progressive stages are documented: Stage A shows both obverse and reverse in early die state with the reverse independently listed as DDR-001, Stage B in mid-die state remains unconfirmed, and Stage C in late die state likewise awaits confirmation. The pairing with DDR-001 creates a dual-variety die where both sides carry cataloged hub-doubling features, making this coin attributable from either face. Proof Franklin Half Dollars were struck at Philadelphia from specially prepared dies, and mirror-like fields make even light spread more visible than on business strikes. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper at 12.50 grams, this early proof Franklin Half Dollar combines obverse doubling with a paired DDR-001 reverse on a dual-variety die rewarding examination of both sides.
