1949-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
ErrorDescription
A combination variety on a 1949-S Lincoln Wheat Cent, this coin carries both a doubled die obverse (Wexler 1949-S 1c WDDO-001) showing doubling on the digits 194 in the date, and a repunched mintmark listed separately as 1949-S 1c WRPM-050 exhibiting an S/S West. Collectors should note both attributions when identifying this die pair, as the combination of a doubled die obverse with a repunched mintmark on a single coin represents a scarcer find than either variety alone. Obverse die markers include heavy die scratches running NNW from the back of the jacket to the right of the Y in LIBERTY. Reverse die markers include a long die scratch north from the top of the second S in STATES, a die scratch south from the lower right O in ONE through the upper E in CENT, and die scratches south from the bottom of C in CENT. The 1949-S was struck at the San Francisco Mint in bronze composition during the late years of the Lincoln Wheat Cent series. The dual-variety status makes this a particularly desirable find for cherrypickers examining 1949-S cents.
