Description

Twelfth repunched mintmark from the Wexler Team for the 1949 San Francisco Lincoln Wheat Cent, WRPM-012 is cross-referenced as CONECA RPM number 3, confirming documentation across two major research organizations. Multiple die stages reveal progressive deterioration: clashed dies under Lincoln's chin, die gouges accumulating across the design, and chips developing at specific locations. Stage B carries a diagnostic die chip under and to the right of the D in GOD — a small fragment lost from the die surface appearing as a raised bump on struck coins. The clash evidence beneath the chin indicates at least one planchet-less strike cycle where reverse elements transferred ghost impressions onto the obverse. San Francisco struck 64,290,000 Lincoln Cents in 1949, each die receiving its S mintmark through hand-punching. The accumulation of damage — clashing, gouging, and chipping — documents the full arc of the die's working life from early production through terminal deterioration. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1949-S 1-cent WRPM-012. N/S die scratches about the 19 of date. Reverse Stage A: Die scratch runs north from the top of the O of ONE ending at the bottom of the first U of PLURIBUS. Die scratch runs between the T of CENT and the second T of STATES. Die scratch runs south along the left side of the E of STATES. Short die scratch runs north from the top of the last T of STATES.
