1949-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-045
Error
Description
Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1949-S 1¢ WRPM-045, this San Francisco Lincoln wheat cent carries a repunched mintmark with no other known cross-references. The obverse die features north-northwest-to-south-southeast die scratches passing through the 19 of the date, a long die scratch running south-southeast from the lower center of the E in LIBERTY, and shorter scratches extending north-northwest from the left center and upper left of E and R in LIBERTY respectively. These scattered obverse scratches provide multiple confirmation points spread across the coin's face. The reverse die is equally well-marked, with north-to-south die scratches above and below the left wheat stem, a die scratch running north-northwest from the lower left side of the last A in AMERICA to the lower right bottom of the A in STATES, a north-to-south die scratch at the left side of the lower opening of the last S in STATES, and a die scratch extending south from the left bottom of that same S. The extensive network of die scratches on both sides makes WRPM-045 one of the more readily confirmable mintmark varieties in the 1949-S wheat cent series.
