1949-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-040

Description

Two distinct die stages define the 1949-S Lincoln Wheat Cent WRPM-040, each carrying its own constellation of die markers. Stage A shows a die gouge on the back of the eye on the obverse and an east-west die scratch above the T of CENT on the reverse. Stage B introduces different diagnostics: a die gouge to the left of the upper last T of TRUST and a die chip beneath the mintmark on the obverse. The Stage B reverse exhibits more advanced deterioration—a die crack runs from the top of the right wheat stalk down to the lower right leg, a die chip sits atop the T of CENT, and a diagonal die scratch cuts through the C of AMERICA. This progression from relatively clean early markers to the cracked and chipped late state provides a textbook example of how RPM die stages can be sequenced by tracking the accumulation of secondary die damage. Collectors seeking this variety should note that each stage presents a meaningfully different appearance under magnification.
