1949-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-035

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1949-S 1c WRPM-035, this Lincoln Wheat Cent carries a repunched S mint mark from the San Francisco Mint, struck in bronze (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc). The high sequence number WRPM-035 reflects intensive cataloging of repunched mintmarks for this postwar date. Obverse die markers include a group of four short die scratches above and to the right of the E in WE, five die gouges to the right of the upper D in GOD, a die gouge running northeast to southwest in the field at the tip of Lincoln's nose, and north-south die scratches above and below LIBERTY — strongest above and below RTY. The reverse carries a die gouge inside the lower second U of UNUM, an X-shaped die scratch inside the O of ONE, a die chip on top of the E in ONE, and a rim burr to the right of the upper wheat stalk. This extensive array of obverse and reverse die markers provides multiple attribution points for confident identification. The 1949-S Wheat Cent was produced during the final decade of Victor David Brenner's wheat-ear reverse, which would give way to the Lincoln Memorial design in 1959.
