1949-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-029
Error
Description
The Wexler attribution for the 1949-S Lincoln Wheat cent WRPM-029 captures a repunched mintmark variety distinguished by a substantial cluster of die markers mapped precisely across both faces. Wexler Variety ID: 1949-S 1c WRPM-029. On the obverse, long die scratches run northward from the 1 in the date, terminating in the field east of the forehead; two die gouges appear at the rim edge below IN; and a stronger die scratch extends northward from the top of the Y in LIBERTY. These three markers collectively anchor the obverse die identity. The reverse carries complementary features: a group of die scratches runs southward from between the L and U of PLURIBUS, ending on the upper O of ONE; strong die scratches run southeast inside the lower N of CENT; and a single scratch connects the N of CENT to the top of the first S of STATES. Lincoln Wheat cents are struck in 95% copper bronze. The 1949-S was a moderately produced San Francisco issue, and its repunched mintmark varieties benefit from the hand-punching methods still in use at mid-century.
