Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this San Francisco Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent RPM-005 features prominent die scratches that provide multiple attribution markers at Stage B. Die markers UVC-328 / DMR-007: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with a short die gouge from the lower L of LIBERTY to rim at MDS, two parallel die scratches North-South between Y of LIBERTY and back of head, and die scratches North-South through E of ONE and T of CENT at MDS; Stage C with weak obverse die scratches at LDS and die scratches Southwest-Northeast across reverse at LDS. The parallel die scratches between LIBERTY and the head provide a distinctive visual marker for Stage B attribution. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, the 1949-S was struck at the San Francisco Mint during the post-war period when each working die received its S through manual punch application.
