1947-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista with die identifiers UVC-160 and DMR-003, the 1947-S DDO-001 Roosevelt Silver Dime displays light spread on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the designer's initials in a top-to-bottom direction — a spread pattern where the hub displacement was oriented vertically, producing doubling that manifests as north-south separation across the affected inscription elements. Three die stages are documented with notable detail: Stage A at early-to-mid die state (EMDS) shows die scratches in front of the eye and on the forehead, with the reverse identified as MMS-002 (trumpet tail) — a reverse misplaced mintmark variety where the S mintmark produced a secondary impression in a different location, creating the "trumpet tail" feature; Stage B at mid-die-state (MDS, unconfirmed); and Stage C at late die state (LDS, unconfirmed). The Stage A pairing of this doubled die obverse with the MMS-002 trumpet tail reverse creates a combination variety with interest on both sides of the coin. John R.
