1947-S Over Mint Mark WOMM-001
Error
Description
Among early Roosevelt dime varieties, the 1947-S WOMM-001 is among the most coveted — cross-referenced as CONECA OMM #1, Cherrypickers FS-10-1947S-501 (013), and Breen 2735, with Wexler Variety ID 1947-S 10¢ WOMM-001. An Over Mint Mark arises when a working die received one mint mark punch and was subsequently repunched with a different mint mark. The "Sans Serif" S used as the final mint mark on this die — distinctive for its absence of decorative serifs — constitutes a die style marker in its own right. The reverse die marker suite is thorough: nearly horizontal die scratches through the lower CA of AMERICA, a die scratch running north from the bottom of the inside of the D in DIME, a die scratch extending southeast from the bottom of the mint mark, and die scratches southwest-to-northeast inside the top of the M in DIME. The obverse carries a short die scratch west-southwest from the rim between the R and T in LIBERTY, plus short die scratches north-northeast to south-southwest right of the top of the Y in LIBERTY. John R. Sinnock's Roosevelt dime design on 90% silver gives this 1947-S WOMM-001 both design and die history significance.
