1938-D Over Mint Mark WOMM-002

Description

The 1938-D Buffalo Nickel WOMM-002 is a D-over-S over mint mark on the final year of the Buffalo Nickel series, which ran from 1913 through 1938. The S is visibly present beneath the D: the diagonal curve of the S shows inside the D, the top left curve of the S appears just below the D's upper serif, and a small portion of the S's upper serif bulges from the top right of the D. Wexler attribution is WOMM-002, cross-referenced as CONECA OMM #2 and Cherrypickers FS-05-1938D-512. On the reverse, a strong die scratch runs from the second S in STATES through the lower portion of the dot to the O in OF — a marker spanning three design elements that anchors attribution independent of mintmark inspection. No significant obverse die markers are recorded. The D-over-S configuration resulted from the Denver Mint receiving dies previously hubbed for San Francisco. As the final Buffalo Nickel combined with a well-documented over mint mark carrying both CONECA and Cherrypickers cross-references, WOMM-002 is one of the most thoroughly attributed varieties of the series and commands sustained interest from both type collectors and variety specialists.
