A combination variety from the final year of the Buffalo Nickel series, the 1938-D WDDR-001 pairs a doubled die reverse with an over mintmark independently cataloged as WOMM-003 in the Wexler OMM Files, showing a D/S. The diagonal curve of the S is visible inside the D, with the bottom of the S appearing just below the D, documenting a dramatic mintmark transition. The reverse doubling shows a close Class II spread on EPU, while light Class VI extra thickness appears on USA and FIVE CENTS. No significant obverse die markers have been noted. The dual attribution as both DDR and OMM on a last-year Buffalo Nickel elevates this variety's significance, as the D/S over mintmark records the Denver Mint's use of a die originally intended for San Francisco.
