Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team under Variety ID 1950-D 50-cent WOMM-001, this Denver Mint Franklin Half Dollar exhibits an over mintmark with the obverse also carrying a doubled die designated WDDO-001, displaying clockwise spread on the date. The obverse die markers include a die scratch running east-southeast from the bottom right E of LIBERTY and parallel scratches running northwest-southeast through the lower I in LIBERTY. The reverse presents multiple diagnostics: a horizontal scratch under the E in STATES, a die scratch running southeast from the lower right of the bell clapper, parallel scratches running south-southeast from the bottom B in PLURIBUS through the M in UNUM, and parallel scratches running north-northwest from the top of I and B in PLURIBUS. Over mintmark varieties occur when a die intended for one mint facility receives a second mintmark punch from another facility's punch, or when the same mintmark is repunched at a different angle or position. The combination of an over mintmark reverse with a doubled die obverse on a single coin makes this variety doubly appealing to Franklin Half Dollar specialists.
