Description

Among the most recognized over mintmark varieties in the Jefferson Nickel series, the 1954-S WOMM-001 carries cross-references spanning CONECA OMM #1, Cherrypickers' FS-05-1954S-501 (033), Breen #2734, and Wexler 1954-S 5¢ WOMM-001. A D mintmark was punched into the working die before the intended S was applied over it, leaving the lower portion of the D's vertical bar visible within the S interior. This D remnant is the primary identification feature. Stage A shows the D bar clearly in the S lower left, along with a die scratch through the U of TRUST, a WNW scratch from the dome, and an ESE scratch from the lower E of FIVE. Stage B shows the S bottom appearing filled and the D bar no longer visible — meaning only Stage A coins display the full diagnostic remnant, while Stage B coins require other markers. The Cherrypickers' FS-05-1954S-501 listing places WOMM-001 among the premium Jefferson Nickel varieties worth actively seeking, and the multi-catalogue recognition makes it one of the best-documented over mintmarks in the regular-issue Jefferson series.
