1946 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-013
Error
Description
Documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-0601 and DMR-014, this 1946 Washington Silver Quarter DDO-013 displays light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, and the date — a broad obverse inscription doubling pattern where the hub displacement affected motto, legend, and date elements simultaneously, indicating a relatively straight-line offset between primary and secondary hub impressions. Three die stages document the working die's progression: Stage A in early die state (EDS), unconfirmed; Stage B in mid-die-state (MDS), also unconfirmed; and Stage C at late die state (LDS) where the obverse shows a die crack from BUS of PLURIBUS to the eagle's wing and a die crack running down the eagle's right wing to the Q of QUARTER. The Stage C die cracks are notable for extending across both the obverse inscription area and the reverse design, indicating advanced structural failure in both dies by the time this late state was reached. The expert attribution from VarietyVista provides the standardized die stage documentation that allows collectors to identify which state their specimen represents by the presence or absence of specific crack systems. John Flanagan designed the Washington Quarter with an obverse based on Jean-Antoine Houdon's famous bust of George Washington and a heraldic eagle reverse. The 1946 Philadelphia Mint Washington Quarter was struck in 90% silver composition (90% silver, 10% copper) weighing 6.25 grams with a diameter of 24.3 mm. The post-war 1946 date marks the return to full peacetime coinage production, and the light doubling on three separate obverse inscription groups provides multiple attribution checkpoints for variety specialists examining this date.
