Description

Among the strongest doubled dies in the 1946 Washington quarter series, WDDO-003 displays extremely strong extra thickness on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the date, the designer's initials, and the lower queue. The breadth of affected design elements across nearly every major obverse feature makes this one of the more dramatic Washington quarter doubled dies of the postwar era. The obverse die carries several identifying markers: a die scratch running northwest from the rim between the 1 and the 9 in the date, a short die scratch extending west from the top of the E in LIBERTY, a northwest-to-southeast die scratch in the field to the left of the base of the bust, and two parallel die scratches running southwest from the lower left of the first T in TRUST. The reverse die paired with this obverse is itself a minor doubled die, cataloged in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1946 25¢ WDDR-002, with a clockwise spread from a pivot at about 6:00 showing on USA. This dual-doubled-die pairing is cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1946 25¢ WDDO-003.
