1946-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006
ErrorDescription
Spread towards the center on the date identifies this 1946-D Washington Silver Quarter doubled die obverse, one of six documented DDOs for this Denver date. John Flanagan's portrait of George Washington, adopted in 1932, carries enough fine detail in the hair ribbon, the queue, and the facial features to register moderate hub displacement. Obverse die markers are robust: a strong die crack runs across the base of the bust with a die chip to the left of the designer's initials, and a light horizontal die crack can be found in the upper hair. Reverse: a die crack on the eagle's right wing. Cross-referenced by both CONECA (7-O-II) and the Wexler system (1946-D 25¢ WDDO-006), giving collectors two independent attribution paths. The Wexler Team attributed this variety. Denver's 1946 quarter production reached approximately 9.1 million pieces as the Mint resumed full peacetime coinage, and six documented DDOs from this date suggests that post-war die production experienced transitional quality challenges. The 90% silver composition adds intrinsic value alongside the variety premium.
