1945 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-014
Error
Description
Documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-0530 and DMR-015, the 1945 Washington Silver Quarter DDO-014 presents medium spread on the letters of LIBERTY across Washington's head. Three die stages have been identified: Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B in mid-die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C in late die state showing a die crack across the upper hair and a die crack from the eagle's right wing extending to the Q of QUARTER. The medium spread classification on LIBERTY indicates the doubling is readily visible under moderate magnification, with the secondary impression creating a discernible offset on each letter. The Stage C die cracks spanning from the obverse portrait hair to the reverse eagle wing and QUARTER inscription document the terminal deterioration phase of this die pair, providing collectors with die state sequencing data. John Flanagan's Washington Quarter obverse places LIBERTY across the top of the coin directly above and in front of Washington's head, making it one of the most prominent locations for detecting hub doubling on this design type. The 1945 Philadelphia Mint Washington Quarter was struck in 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 6.25 grams at 24.3 mm diameter, with a wartime mintage of 74,372,000 pieces. The 14th cataloged doubled die obverse for 1945 reflects significant die variety documentation activity for this wartime date. Examination under 7x magnification should focus on the vertical strokes of LIBERTY where medium spread produces the most clearly separated doubled image.
