1945 Repunched Mintmark RPM-007

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, the 1945 RPM-007 Jefferson Nickel features a P/P/P triple-punched mintmark with secondary impressions displaced South and then South again, indicating the large P above Monticello received three separate punch applications with each successive strike positioned progressively further south from the intended location — or alternatively, two correction attempts moving the punch northward from an initial too-low placement. Die markers UVC-198 / DMR-008 track three stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with both reverse and obverse at MDS; and Stage C with reverse and obverse at LDS. Triple-punched mintmarks represent a more complex manufacturing event than standard two-impression RPMs because they document at least three separate contacts between the mintmark punch and the die face, each at a slightly different position. The Jefferson Nickel was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1945 in the wartime silver alloy of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese, weighing 5.0 grams with a 21.21 mm diameter. Felix Schlag's design won the 1938 competition for the series, and the wartime reverse featured the oversized P mintmark above Monticello's dome. The P/P/P South, South displacement pattern on this RPM-007 is diagnostically distinctive because the two southward shifts create a vertical stacking effect visible at the top of the P, where the uppermost remnant of the initial impression appears above the primary letter's final position. As an early catalog number (007) within the extensive 1945-P RPM population, this variety was likely among the first identified for this date, suggesting it may exhibit more pronounced separation than higher-numbered varieties discovered later through more careful searching.
