1945 Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Among the most striking repunched mintmark varieties in the wartime Jefferson nickel series, the 1945-P RPM-002 displays P/P/P/P quadruple repunching with the secondary impressions displaced North, South, and South relative to the primary. Die stages: Stage A is early die state, unconfirmed; Stage B shows both reverse and obverse at middle die state; Stage C shows both sides at late die state. The 1945-P wartime nickel carries the large P above Monticello — Philadelphia's first-ever mintmark on a regular-issue coin, introduced alongside the 35% silver alloy change in 1942. Four separate mintmark punching impressions in a single die is exceptionally unusual, suggesting significant difficulty aligning the punch during die preparation. Quadruple repunching produces a complex overlapping mintmark image distinctly different from simple double or triple RPM varieties, and the North-South-South displacement on RPM-002 creates a vertically elongated cluster visible under moderate magnification.
