Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as DDO-021 with UVC-0397 and DMR-022, this 1944 Washington Silver Quarter doubled die obverse exhibits very light spread on LIBERTY. The minimal nature of the doubling — described as "very light" — indicates a subtle hub displacement that produced only slight offset between primary and secondary impressions, requiring careful examination under magnification to detect. Three die stages are documented: Stage A in EDS (Early Die State) remains unconfirmed; Stage B in MDS (Mid Die State) also remains unconfirmed; and Stage C in LDS (Late Die State) displays a die crack across the bust extending into the field both in front and behind the queue (ponytail), with the reverse also in LDS. The Stage C die crack traversing the bust is a prominent die deterioration feature that serves as a strong diagnostic — its path across the bust and into the fields on both sides creates an unmistakable linear marker that can be detected under low magnification or even with the unaided eye on well-preserved specimens. The Washington Quarter was designed by John Flanagan, first issued in 1932 for the bicentennial of George Washington's birth.
