Description

DDO-019 of the 1944 Washington quarter presents medium doubling spread on lower LIBERTY, identifiable under moderate magnification. Cataloged under UVC-0395 and DMR-020, the variety is documented in three die stages. Stage A represents the early die state, which remains unconfirmed. Stage B is characterized by a circular die gouge on the lower bust running through the designer's initials, placing both the obverse and reverse at mid-die state. Stage C shows both obverse and reverse in late die state, with additional deterioration visible. The progression from the clean early state through the appearance of the circular bust gouge to the advanced wear of Stage C provides a useful framework for sequencing specimens. The 1944 Washington quarter was struck during World War II at the Philadelphia Mint in the standard 90% silver composition.
