1944 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-016
Error
Description
Cataloged with UVC-0392 and DMR-017, this 1944 Washington Quarter exhibits a light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST from hub doubling on the obverse. Three die stages have been documented for this die pair, tracking the progression from early through late die state. The late die state develops a die crack running across Washington's forehead and hair, providing a useful marker for identifying specimens from the final production stage. Struck in 90% silver (0.7734 oz ASW), the 1944 Washington Quarter was produced during the height of World War II, when silver quarter production continued at Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco to meet both domestic commerce needs and military payroll demands. The light spread on the motto letters requires careful magnification to confirm, as the displacement is modest compared to more dramatic doubled die obverses in the Washington Quarter series. DDO-016's three documented die stages offer collectors the opportunity to assemble a die state progression set, tracing the life of this particular die pair from its initial use through the development of the forehead crack in its final stage.
