1944 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-006
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista with die marker codes UVC-0382 and DMR-007 and cross-referenced as FS-101, this 1944 Washington Silver Quarter DDO-006 displays medium spread on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the date — three key obverse zones that confirm hub displacement across a wide area of John Flanagan's Washington portrait design. Three die stages document the die's progressive deterioration: Stage A shows the obverse in Early-to-Mid Die State with die gouges visible through the lower letters of QUARTER on the reverse. Stage B advances to Late-Mid Die State with a die crack developing through the upper hair on Washington's portrait, another crack across the base of the bust, and a crack descending down the eagle's right wing on the reverse. Stage C reaches Late Die State, marked by a die chip on Washington's nose with the reverse also in LDS condition. This three-stage progression gives collectors a framework for dating their specimens within the die's service life. The FS-101 cross-reference in the Fivaz-Stanton Cherry Pickers' Guide confirms this variety's significance as a collectible attribution. The 1944 Washington Quarter was struck in 90% silver at 6.25 grams and 24.3 mm diameter during wartime production, and the combination of medium spread across three design zones with well-documented die staging makes DDO-006 one of the more completely characterized Washington Quarter doubled die varieties.
