1940 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-008
Error
Description
The 1940 Washington Quarter DDO-008, documented by VarietyVista under die tracking codes UVC-0122 and DMR-010, shows a light spread on the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST. Three die stages are recognized. Stage A is the early die state (EDS). Stage B is the middle die state (MDS), distinguished by a die scratch connecting through the lower portion of BER in LIBERTY — a reliable attribution marker that persists into later stages. Stage C is the late die state (LDS). The 1940 Washington Quarter is a 90% silver coin, struck before the composition change to clad in 1965. John Flanagan's portrait of George Washington, introduced in 1932 to mark the 200th anniversary of his birth, appears on the obverse of all pre-clad Washington Quarters. The relatively subtle spread on IN GOD WE TRUST makes the BER die scratch particularly useful for attribution when the doubling itself has softened through die wear.
