1940 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004

Description

Submitted by John A. Wexler and photographed by Billy G. Crawford for the Wexler Files, this 1940 Philadelphia Washington silver quarter displays a clockwise spread from a pivot point at approximately three o'clock, visible on IN GOD WE TRUST. Cross-referenced as CONECA 4-O-V, the obverse carries a network of die scratches: strong scratches run northwest from the top of I and N in IN, a heavy scratch runs WNW/ESE from the bottom of the 1 in the date, and another heavy scratch runs west from the bottom of the 9. An additional scratch parallels the rim above LIBERTY, and another runs NW/SE between the upper B and E of the same word. No reverse die markers have been noted. The pivoted hub doubling creates an asymmetric spread pattern where displacement increases with distance from the three o'clock pivot, concentrating the strongest doubling on the motto letters nearest the nine o'clock position. Early Washington quarter doubled dies from the 1930s and 1940s are scarce relative to later decades, and this WDDO-004 adds to the small catalog of pre-war doubled die obverses documented for the series.
