Description

The 1940 DDO-004 is a doubled die obverse variety on the Philadelphia Mint Washington Quarter, cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-0118 with die-marriage reference DMR-006. The obverse exhibits a medium spread on OD of GOD, WE, and ST of TRUST — three separate motto areas all displaying the same directional doubling, confirming a hub-doubling event affecting the upper obverse. The consistent spread across multiple elements makes this variety attributable even when individual letters show moderate separation, as the pattern of involvement is diagnostic in itself. Three die stages have been identified: Stage A shows both obverse and reverse in early die state, Stage B displays both in mid-die state, and Stage C is the late die state (unconfirmed). The confirmed early and mid-die state observations indicate examples exist across a range of die life, while the unconfirmed late die state suggests the die was retired before significant deterioration or late-stage examples have not been reported.
