Description

Light spread on GOD WE and UST of TRUST identifies this eighth documented doubled die obverse for the 1940 Denver Mint Washington Silver Quarter, cataloged by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-0136 and DMR-009. An unusually detailed Stage B die state description notes a die crack across the forehead and upper hair reaching Mid Die State, a die crack across the bust to the queue (the ponytail at the back of Washington's head), and a die scratch from the S of PLURIBUS to the eagle's wing on the reverse. The cross-reference comment reveals that the reverse die is listed as RPM-003 Stage B — meaning this obverse doubled die was paired with a reverse that also carries a repunched mint mark variety, creating a dual-variety die marriage that collectors find particularly desirable. Stage A is Early Die State (unconfirmed), and Stage C is Late Die State (unconfirmed). The convergence of a doubled die obverse with a repunched mint mark reverse on the same die pair is uncommon and adds numismatic premium to attributable specimens. The 1940-D Washington Quarter's modest mintage of 2,797,600 makes any documented variety on this date relatively scarce. Eight doubled die obverses for the Denver issue, combined with the RPM-003 reverse pairing, demonstrates the remarkable depth of die variety research on early Washington Quarters from the Denver Mint.
