1940-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1940-D 25¢ WDDO-004 and cross-referenced as Crawford CDDO-001, this Washington Silver Quarter exhibits a spread to the north on IN GOD WE TRUST, with possible doubling on the right end of the underside of the horizontal crossbar of the 4 in the date — the conditional "possible" qualifier indicating the doubling on the date element is subtle enough that attribution experts have not definitively confirmed it. Obverse die markers include a cluster of short die scratches to the left of Washington's nose and two short parallel die scratches above the D of GOD. Reverse markers show a die scratch extending northeast from the center right side of the second L in DOLLAR and a die scratch extending northeast from the leaves to the left of the arrow tips. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 1940-D 25¢ WDDO-004. The Washington Silver Quarter was struck at the Denver Mint in 1940 in 90% silver composition — 90% silver and 10% copper — weighing 6.25 grams with a diameter of 24.26 mm. John Flanagan designed the obverse Washington portrait and heraldic eagle reverse. The 1940-D had a mintage of approximately 2.8 million pieces, making it a relatively low-mintage issue within the series that attracts both date collectors and variety specialists. The Crawford CDDO-001 cross-reference to the Crawford catalog for Washington Quarter doubled dies provides an independent attribution confirmation, and the northward spread on IN GOD WE TRUST means the secondary hub impression was displaced upward relative to the primary, pushing the doubled image above the primary inscription.
