1937-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-005

Description

Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cents from 1937 were produced in large quantities during the late Depression era, and variety collectors have cataloged multiple doubled die obverses from this issue. WDDO-005 is a doubled die obverse variety identified on the 1937-D cent, where a secondary hub impression was transferred to the working die at a slight positional offset during the die manufacturing process. Victor David Brenner's obverse portrait of Abraham Lincoln, introduced in 1909 as the first U.S. coin to feature a real historical figure, provides several focal points for doubled die detection: the LIBERTY inscription, IN GOD WE TRUST motto, the date, and details of Lincoln's portrait and coat.
