Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team and carrying multiple cross-references including CONECA 1-R-VI and Coppercoins 1937D-1DR-001, the 1937-D WDDR-001 Lincoln Wheat Cent exhibits strong Class VI extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM, the dots, both wheat ears and stems, and the outermost letters of USA — an extensive spread affecting nearly every major reverse design element. The CONECA Class VI designation identifies Distorted Hub Doubling, produced when the working hub was slightly deformed or misaligned during the impression transfer to the working die. A notable additional feature is that the obverse mintmark is itself a repunched mintmark listed in the Wexler RPM Files as WRPM-001 (D/D North), creating a coin struck from a DDR reverse paired with an RPM obverse — a dual-variety combination. Die markers include a very short die scratch protruding from the right side of the D in UNITED on the reverse. Published market values range from $3 in VG through $5 in Fine, $10 in VF, $15 in XF, $20 in AU, $25 in MS60, $35 in MS63, to $50 in MS65RD — establishing a progressive pricing structure that rewards both grade and original red color preservation. The Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck at the Denver Mint in 1937, composed of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, weighing 3.11 grams with a diameter of 19.05 mm. Victor David Brenner designed the obverse. The comprehensive spread across virtually all reverse elements makes this one of the more visually dramatic doubled die reverses in the pre-war Wheat Cent series, and the dual DDR/RPM status on a single coin enhances its appeal to collectors who pursue both variety categories simultaneously.
