1936-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

An extra eyelid below Lincoln's normal eyelid serves as the primary diagnostic for WDDO-001, the first cataloged doubled die obverse for the 1936-D Lincoln wheat cent. This Class IV (Offset Hub) variety was produced when the hub contacted the die slightly off-center during the impression process, shifting fine facial details just enough to duplicate the engraved eyelid line into a visible secondary arc. Die markers on the obverse include die scratches running southwest to northeast in the field to the right of the bowtie, while the reverse carries a die scratch running south from the top of the inside of the C in CENT. These scratches are specific to this working die pair and remain consistent across die states.
