RCD-1c-1936D-01R Retained Cud
Error
Description
Sole currently documented retained cud on the reverse of a 1936 Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent, RCD-1c-1936D-01R was cataloged by Cuds on Coins with a cross-reference to JCc-1936D_052 and a documentation date of December 4, 2023. The single-digit sequence number (-01R) indicates this is the sole reverse retained cud identified for the 1936-D date to date, though additional discoveries remain possible as collectors continue examining this Depression-era issue. A retained cud preserves a die rim fracture where the broken section stayed attached during continued production — the struck coin displays a raised, distorted area at the rim that retains partial design detail rather than the featureless mass of a full cud. The 1936-D cent was produced at Denver during the mid-1930s recovery period when U.S. Mint production was rebuilding from the extreme lows of 1931-1933. Denver struck approximately 40.6 million cents in 1936, a substantial but not enormous quantity that consumed a moderate number of die pairs. The cross-reference to JCc-1936D_052 in the John Cronin catalog indicates this retained cud represents the 52nd cataloged die event for 1936-D cents across all die failure categories — cuds, retained cuds, pre-cuds, and die breaks combined. Victor David Brenner's wheat ears reverse, in its 27th year of continuous production, provides the design canvas. The December 2023 documentation date makes this a relatively recent addition to the catalog, demonstrating that new die varieties continue to be identified on coins nearly ninety years old.
