Description

Cross-referenced as Fivaz-Stanton FS-502, this VarietyVista-documented 1935-D Buffalo Nickel carries an extraordinary D/D/D/D Southwest, Southeast, Northeast quadruple-punched mintmark — documenting four separate punch applications. Die markers UVC-143 / DMR-003: Stage A with strong secondary mintmarks at EDS, a die gouge southeast from the lower horizontal bar of E of FIVE, and obverse at EDS; Stage B with only the secondary mintmark to the west visible at MDS and obverse at MDS; Stage C with the die gouge worn away at LDS and obverse at LDS. The progressive narrowing from multiple visible secondary marks to just one documents selective erasure. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm at the Denver Mint during James Earle Fraser's penultimate decade, the FS-502 listing makes this actively sought by Cherrypickers' Guide collectors.
